🦷 Tooth Extractions in Children: What Parents Should Know
While our priority is always to preserve your child’s natural teeth, there are times when removing a tooth is the best choice for their health and development. When an extraction is necessary, our team works hard to make the process gentle, safe, and stress-free—for both you and your child.
✅ Why Baby Teeth May Need to Be Removed
-
Severe decay that can’t be repaired, sometimes with infection
-
Over-retained baby teeth blocking adult teeth from coming in properly
-
Orthodontic reasons, such as making room for straighter alignment
💡 Aftercare Tips for a Smooth Recovery
Proper care after an extraction helps reduce discomfort and speed up healing:
-
Apply pressure by gently biting on a damp gauze pad for 45–60 minutes. Replace as needed.
-
Limit activity and keep your child’s head elevated for the first day.
-
Use ice packs (15 min on/off) during the first 36 hours to reduce swelling.
-
Avoid straws, spitting, or smoking (if applicable) for 5–7 days to prevent dry socket.
-
Brush gently around the site and avoid touching the sutures.
-
Rinse with warm salt water (starting 48 hours post-op) every 1–2 hours—no alcohol-based mouthwash.
-
Stick to soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, or eggs.
-
Stay hydrated, but have your child drink from a cup (no straws).
-
Give all prescribed medication as directed. Call us if there are side effects or questions.
⚠️ What’s Normal & What’s Not
Some swelling, discomfort, or minor bleeding is expected—but here’s what to look for:
-
Mild bleeding: Pink saliva is normal. If bleeding continues, use damp gauze or a moistened tea bag to apply pressure.
-
Swelling: Peaks in 1–2 days and fades by day 7–10. Use ice early on, then switch to warm compresses.
-
Jaw stiffness (trismus): A sore jaw or trouble opening the mouth can last 3–5 days.
-
Dry socket: If pain worsens and radiates to the ear a few days after surgery, call us immediately.
-
Tooth fragments (bone sequestra): Small, sharp pieces may work their way out naturally. Let us know if they cause discomfort.
-
Lightheadedness: This can happen if your child hasn’t eaten. Offer something soft and sugary to help.
-
Numbness: Lingering numbness is normal for up to 12 hours post-procedure.
