Nerve Treatment
🧠 Pediatric Pulp Therapy (Nerve Treatment)
When a cavity becomes deep enough to reach the nerve (pulp) of a tooth, a specialized treatment called pulp therapy—or "baby root canal"—may be needed to save the tooth. This procedure is commonly performed in children to relieve pain, stop infection, and preserve the natural tooth for as long as possible.
🦷 What Is the Tooth Pulp?
The pulp is the soft inner tissue of a tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. It helps keep the tooth alive by delivering nutrients and oxygen. In children, the pulp can become damaged due to severe decay, trauma, or even large cavities that haven’t yet caused pain but are close to the nerve on X-rays.
⚠️ When Is Pulp Therapy Needed?
-
Toothaches or lingering pain
-
Swelling or redness around a tooth
-
Sensitivity to hot or cold foods
-
Loose or discolored teeth
-
Deep cavities visible on X-rays (even without symptoms)
Even if your child isn’t in pain, treatment may still be recommended to prevent future infection or damage.
🛠️ Types of Pulp Therapy
-
Pulpotomy
Used when part of the nerve is infected, but the root portion is still healthy. The affected pulp is removed, and a medicated material is placed to soothe and protect the remaining tissue. A crown is typically placed to restore the tooth’s strength.
-
Pulpectomy
Needed when the entire pulp, including the root canals, is infected. All of the tissue is removed, the canals are cleaned, and the space is filled with a biocompatible material. A crown is placed afterward. This is more extensive than a pulpotomy and may take more than one visit.
-
Indirect Pulp Therapy (for permanent teeth)
If the cavity is close to—but hasn’t reached—the nerve, special medication may be applied to protect the pulp and allow the tooth to heal naturally, avoiding full nerve treatment.
💡 Why Save the Tooth?
Even baby teeth are important! They help with:
-
Proper chewing and speaking
-
Holding space for adult teeth
-
Guiding permanent teeth into position
-
Preventing crowding or misalignment
Removing a tooth too early can cause complications like loss of space, improper jaw growth, or the need for future orthodontic work.
🛡️ Is Pulp Therapy Safe?
Yes. Though sometimes misunderstood, pulp therapy and baby root canals are safe and effective treatments. Modern dental techniques make the procedure comfortable for children, and most recover quickly with little to no discomfort.
Our team uses gentle techniques, child-friendly communication, and calming tools to ensure the experience is stress-free for both children and parents.
